Kerala
Also called Idukki Gold, Kerala Gold, Neelachadayan, Neela Chadayan, Ker
Kerala's ganja heritage centres on the forested high ranges of the Western Ghats, above all Idukki district, where a local type called Neelachadayan and the market name Idukki Gold became shorthand in Indian press for the state's best-known ganja. India's 1985 narcotics law criminalised cultivation, and 1990s reports describe hidden forest plots. Seed-bank accounts suggest travellers' seed carried the line abroad, but no collector or date is documented. Press accounts say Idukki's output has declined, with plantations reportedly moving to the Andhra Pradesh-Odisha border area, while sellers describe the original crop as nearly extinct.
- Region
- Idukki district and the Western Ghats highlands, Kerala
- How sure we are
- Mostly lore. Indian press documents Kerala ganja farming, but the landrace's origin, age and seed trail rest almost entirely on seed-seller accounts and forum lore.
- Keep in mind
- Seed sold as Kerala or Idukki Gold comes from seed-company lines of uncertain provenance, and reports say the original Idukki crop has largely disappeared, so authenticity cannot be verified.
